Dack is the eldest of four children, and the only son of Cressidia and Dan Dirkwood. He often picked fights with kids who picked on his younger sisters and got into a large number of similar scraps. Preferring to think on his feet and let his hands do the talking, Dack eventually claimed rulership of the playground.over children older than him via force of might.

Dack continued to get himself into trouble throughout his years in school, mostly involving fights and bruises all around. Upon his Discovery, Dack was revealed to be Barren. His aunt Ophelia, who herself was captain of one the guard rotations at the Phanes Wall, took him under her wing to introduce him to life as a Barren.

For Dack, the first time he was standing atop the walls and could see how far Phanes stretched, all the people milling about the city- his city- carrying out their everyday lives. There, Dack decided he was going to protect the city as he had once his sisters. When he explained his decision to his parents, Ophelia burst into tears and embraced him, while over her shoulder Dan, his mouth set into a thin line, gave his eldest a single nod.

Dack would cruise through the military academy, graduating in the middle of the class, at which point he applied- and was accepted in to- the force of Legionnaires posted atop the Phanes Wall.

Dack carries a crossbow with him at all times- as a Legionnaire charged with the defense of the city, Dack was expected to keep a ranged weapon on hand as much as possible. Dack's crossbow has the initials for all three of his sisters, encircled by little hearts, carved upon its body.

Dack has a single metal stud on the lobe of his right ear- a gift received on his 25th birthday from his boyfriend, who works as an engineer maintaining the wall.

Dack maintains stilted relations with his mother and a better relationship with his father- his mother, unable to understand why he was willing to risk life and limb in defense of the city. His sisters- Marie, Anna, and Rosa- still greet him warmly, though Dack has lost the ability to really read their faces.
